The ambitious Star Citizen spin-off project people have been waiting for is about to get its next round: Cloud Imperium Games has delayed the release of Squadron 42 again. As studio boss Chris Roberts announced in a blog post, the team is currently aiming to release the game in the second quarter of 2027. Roberts pointed out that the main reason is the huge hype surrounding “Grand Theft Auto 6”. The huge media attention surrounding Rockstar’s open-world heavyweight has the potential to completely swallow up every other game released during the launch period.
In fact, the development team promised at CitizenCon 2024 that it would bring the highly artificial single-player game to the market in the fourth quarter of 2026, in time for the annual IAE. However, after a thorough analysis of the market situation, the management of Cloud Imperium Games decided to exit.
Chris Roberts has made it clear that after twelve years of intense development, he doesn’t want his Wing Commander legacy to compete directly with the marketing rollers of Grand Theft Auto 6. The stakes are too high, and media coverage, content creators, and global attention are almost completely monopolized by Rockstar’s blockbusters.
Although GTA 6 will initially only release in November for consoles and not directly on PC, Roberts stressed that media outcry will still dominate the gaming landscape. In order to give Squadron 42 the stage that the creators feel the project deserves, they are delaying it until the spring of 2027. Despite the delay, selected early adopters and content creators will be able to try the game for the first time during an exclusive trial event taking place on October 9-10, 2026. The studio hopes to announce a specific release date following these playback sessions.
Reaction from the community was mixed. While some fans can understand Roberts’ caution in arguing, skepticism is growing among many supporters. Critics pointed out that the space epic has been in development since 2014 and has repeatedly exceeded its planned release date. Additionally, recent developer livestreams for the main game Star Citizen have been marred by technical issues and frustrations, which is why some observers suspect the extra development time is simply needed for technical fine-tuning.
It remains to be seen whether the plan for the second quarter of 2027 can go ahead as scheduled. With Hollywood stars like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, and Henry Cavill on board, the project remains one of the most ambitious undertakings in video game history, both in terms of gameplay and personnel.
