Experimental version has been leaked online DLSS 5 – New neural rendering technology NVIDIAis expected to be officially released this fall. The leak has allowed modders to try out the system in several modern games and get a first look at how much it can change a project’s usual visual appearance.

Unlike traditional DLSS functions, which are mainly responsible for upscaling and frame generation, DLSS 5 directly uses neural models to generate single image elements. The technology is able to process lights, materials, skin, hair and other details in a scene using data provided by the game. Nvidia is positioning it as one of the biggest leaps forward in computer graphics since the advent of hardware ray tracing.

However, early demonstrations of DLSS 5 received mixed reactions. As detail is added, the technology can significantly change a character’s appearance in some cases, sparking debate about the acceptable limits of using artificial intelligence in rendering.

The reason for the new experiment is a leak of the DLSSNR library found in the PC version NBA 2K27. Enthusiasts discovered that the archive apparently contains components needed for neural rendering work. Soon community modder Renault DX We were able to launch the technology in Control, and demos of its working began to appear.

The experiments didn’t stop there. There have been attempts to integrate leaked components into “Cyberpunk 2077”, “Final Fantasy 7 Reborn” and “The Last of Us Part II”. The results were mixed: in some places, DLSS 5 did make the skin, clothes, and lighting more detailed, while in other places it started to visibly change the characters’ faces. Specifically discussed are the images of Cloud and Ellie, which have been processed to look significantly different from the original version of the game.

This is one of the main complaints about the technology. Players are worried that neural rendering will not only improve the graphics, but actually interfere with the artistic style set by the developers. In some cases, the changes look so unusual that users compare the results to the “uncanny valley” effect.

There are also performance issues. In an early test of the RTX 5070 Ti control Enabling DLSS 5 for character models is said to reduce the 4K frame rate from approximately 71 FPS to 35 FPS. However, it’s too early to draw final conclusions: we’re talking about an unofficial and apparently unfinished version of the technology that works through modifications.

Presumably, the current leaks are limited to RTX 50 series graphics cards, but this does not mean that this will be the list of compatible devices after the official release.

As a result, DLSS 5 looks both impressive and controversial. This technology has the potential to take image quality to the next level, but it also consumes more resources and inadvertently changes the appearance of familiar characters. Nvidia is still continuing to develop and optimize the system, so leaked builds should only be considered early experiments.

A final assessment of DLSS 5 may not be available until this fall’s official release and the first games to fully support the technology.
