Rumors are rampant about unreleased projects from Valve’s development studio. The reason is that a large amount of data totaling approximately 12 TB was leaked, including development files, prototypes and game materials from 2003 to 2013. As fans and prospectors comb through the vast archives, rare gems like early beta versions of Portal 2, deleted mechanics from the prequel F-Stop, and potential remnants of the never-released Half-Life 2: Episode III have surfaced.
This huge treasure trove of information was discovered by well-known Valve insider Gabe Follower and others. Preliminary assessments indicate that this is not the result of a recent hack. Instead, the data apparently comes from Valve’s old content infrastructure “Steam2,” which was officially replaced by SteamPipe in 2013. The historical data sat unnoticed on unprotected, publicly accessible servers for more than a decade before the community discovered it.
One of the most notable finds was the playable beta version of Portal 2 released in 2009. Narratively speaking, this is markedly different from the finished game: instead of Wheatley, you’re accompanied in the test room by old tapes of GLaDOS. The archive also contains assets for F-Stop – a rejected concept that was originally a precursor to Portal 2 and used camera mechanics to manipulate the environment. In addition to Portal, the pack also includes a playable beta version of 2008’s Left 4 Dead, which includes deleted recordings, as well as early material for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
The community is particularly excited about Half-Life 2: Episode III. In the archives, data explorers discovered a model of a weapon called the “Weaponizer”. The concept has appeared in previous leaks as part of Chapter 3, but appears in Portal 2’s folder structure – the developers may have used the weapon as a temporary placeholder.
Since evaluating 12 terabytes of raw data is time-consuming, it’s possible the community will discover more exciting details about the canceled game idea in the coming days and weeks. Valve itself has yet to officially comment on the incident.
