VLC media player downloads exceed 7 billion times

In today’s world of award-winning video streaming platforms, VLC, a free offline media player developed by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, has been downloaded more than 7 billion times across all platforms.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president and lead developer of VLC, announced the new achievement in an email. The project continues to grow rapidly: just over a year and a half has passed since player downloads reached 6 billion in January 2025.

The company recently ported VLC to Amazon’s new TV Vega operating system. VideoLAN is working on implementing support for all other platforms and codecs; the release of VLC 4 is actively being prepared, but a project of this magnitude takes time. Last year, developers said that future players would support automatic translation and subtitle generation using local artificial intelligence models, but the release of these features in VideoLAN has yet to be announced.
