Microsoft announced at Gamescom last week that it would launch a feature that would allow players to convert Xbox console discs into digital copies. At the same time, they tentatively plan to test it among insiders. Today, August 31, a select group of Xbox Insiders will begin receiving an update that will convert game discs in the Microsoft Store to digital versions.
At launch, the program supported over 1,000 CD-ROM games. It includes physical media for Xbox One and Xbox Series X; there are no plans to support Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs.
How the system itself works:
- The player inserts the compatible disc into the console.
- A notification will appear asking you to redeem a digital copy of the game for a specific user.
- Next, the digital copy is linked to the player’s account, and he can then use the item on his own account.

Microsoft points out that players can get the benefits of the digital version of the game for free:
- Play anytime, anywhere support. If the project is included in the program, users will be able to play it not only on consoles, but also on PC.
- Use Xbox cloud gaming. Digital copies can only be played on Xbox Cloud.
- No need to keep inserting discs. Once a digital copy is redeemed, the disc is no longer needed to monitor the license.
It’s important to note that when you sell or transfer a disc, the digital license will be transferred to the new user’s account when they insert it into their console. That is, previous users will be blocked from playing.
