Creative Assembly brought a playable version of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 to Gamescom 2026. Reporters spent about an hour playing the game, trying out the tutorial, a small campaign episode, and a large post-game battle.
The demo was conducted on the new Warcore engine, which the studio created concurrently with the fantasy trilogy. During a training mission, a team of Space Marines landed on Earth to inspect a crashed Inquisition ship. Soon the Orks were blowing up its sides and swarming over it, immediately emphasizing the disparity in the army’s numbers.
Space Marines make up for their lack of fighter numbers with firepower and flexible equipment. Intercessors have access to bolt-action rifles, grenades, and grenade launchers, choosing weapons based on the enemy. Automatic weapons are more effective against Orks, while ranged weapons, such as bolt rifles, are useful in battles against Eldar.
