Google is in talks with Hollywood’s biggest studios, seeking licensing deals that would allow the tech giant to train its artificial intelligence models on copyrighted content in exchange for hefty cash payments. Such a deal could be beneficial to both parties: It would bring huge financial benefits to the studio and give Google a significant advantage in the artificial intelligence race.

In this case, Google is risking almost nothing, and the same can’t be said for Hollywood studios. Partnering with Google may bring them short-term benefits, but it may backfire in the long run and allow the public to be deceived by the entertainment industry. Although Google has so far failed to secure Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery Channel or Universal Pictures to formally agree to cooperate with these studios for media content, the IT giant’s top executives contacted the management of multiple studios and made specific suggestions for further cooperation and development of Google’s artificial intelligence tools.
The company hopes to gain permission to use the vast content of the studio’s copyrighted library to train its artificial intelligence models. Google, meanwhile, is willing to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire them. The company is prepared to pay Disney-owned Pixar Studios about $40 million for the rights to produce copyrighted content for a character, sources said. If Google’s deal covers a large number of characters, those payments could grow into billions of dollars. In this way, the studio will be able to share in Google’s advertising revenue, which will be generated from the artificial intelligence-generated content used by the company’s various platforms, such as YouTube.
No matter how expensive such deals are for Google, they could be a key tool in solidifying the company’s position as one of the leaders in artificial intelligence. Gemini’s ability to create images with Disney and other characters might seem unimportant at first glance. However, it’s things like this that can get people who aren’t into technology to start using generative AI. The content produced through such partnerships may look better than content produced by artificial intelligence models trained on illegally obtained data. Additionally, using the Google logo on official Disney AI-generated content could have a positive impact on creating a positive image of the technology in people’s minds.
