After intense speculation and premature leaks, Nvidia has finally confirmed the news: the controversial DLSS 5 will be officially released on September 4, 2026. Basketball simulation NBA 2K27 from Visual Concepts and 2K will be the premier platform for the new “3D Guided Neural Rendering” technology, as the graphics card manufacturer confirmed ahead of launch. New artificial intelligence features are designed to improve the appearance of titles for realistic TV broadcast quality. At the same time, the hardware giant made it clear that the final version of the feature will be exclusively reserved for GeForce RTX 50 series graphics card owners and GeForce NOW users.
Nvidia is trying to quell the recent wave of criticism as the product is officially announced. The release of the technology caused considerable controversy in the computer gaming community, as early leaks of game archives raised concerns about damage to character models and severe loss of performance.
Contrary to unofficial attempts in the game modding community such as “Control,” Nvidia and 2K emphasize that developers are getting fine-grained control tools in “NBA 2K27.” This means the intensity of the generative AI lighting can be precisely adjusted without ruining the facial features of real NBA stars or distorting the original character design.
The focus on motion simulation appears to be a targeted move by the manufacturer: the technology uses the engine’s geometry and color buffers to display close-up details such as light refraction on ears, hair textures and more realistic skin surfaces, which would be suitable for the TV look of sports broadcasts. However, AI rendering still has an impact. Even with official optimizations, players must expect a performance drop of approximately 50% to 60% in native frame rates when this option is enabled, which according to Nvidia should be compensated for by using frame generation and super-resolution in parallel.
The news is especially a setback for owners of older-generation hardware. When asked directly about backwards compatibility, Nvidia declined: DLSS 5 requires the RTX 50 series’ Blackwell architecture’s Tensor Cores. According to the company, there are no official plans to provide support for RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards, as the complex AI models have been specifically optimized for the latest computing architecture. The modders have previously demonstrated that this code can in principle be executed on older systems, but at a significant performance penalty.
As NBA 2K27 launches in the coming days, it will become clear whether DLSS 5 can address concerns about the artistic integrity of video games in practice.
