Guild Wars 3 was developed to solve the key problems of the modern MMORPG genre – high barriers to entry and lack of player time. This task was important to ArenaNet Studios, as attracting younger audiences and returning veterans required a complete reorganization of the usual mechanics.
Studio head Colin Johanson pointed out in an interview that modern multiplayer games are often regarded as “a second job.” The main hurdle was the tedious preparation before starting—from organizing inventory to setting up the build, which took a full hour.
To solve this problem, the developers want to make the gameplay as responsive as possible, reduce the time to enter a session to 20-30 minutes, and bring the combat dynamics closer to that of a single-player action game. Additionally, the project will maintain a model that does not mandate a monthly subscription, which will allow players to take long breaks without having to worry about falling behind overall progress.
