Blizzard and Xbox have begun preparing a StarCraft announcement, which could come as soon as next week. There is currently no information on what kind of games they plan to show off. Blizzard has been rumored to be developing a StarCraft shooter for years, and this news is expected to be part of the genre rather than a new part of the strategy.
Jason Schreier, known as a source at Blizzard and having written a book about the studio, spoke on the podcast about his expectations for the new StarCraft game. According to him, this will definitely not be a game in the spirit of Destiny:
I didn’t expect this StarCraft to be like Destiny.
In his opinion, if there are 3 options, what projects can Blizzard prepare:
- Story-driven cooperative shooter. It’s a game in the spirit of Far Cry, with vast locations, main and side missions, and the ability to play together. Schreier, meanwhile, believes this approach is the least likely, as Blizzard typically develops projects with multi-year support and regular updates in mind.
- A great PvP shooter. Massive battles in the spirit of Battlefield or Star Wars: Battlefront with races from StarCraft. Players can control personal fighters and vehicles from Terran, Protoss, and Zerg. As Schreier pointed out, the game may be partly a continuation of the ideas of StarCraft: God of War, a game “with a Battlefield spirit” that was canceled in 2019.
- A cooperative PvE game with RPG elements. Schreier believes that the most likely option is a game in the spirit of The Division 2, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, or Helldiver 2. Players can complete missions in third person, develop characters and equipment, and fight against Zerg and Protoss. The reporter believes that the important point is that in such a plan, “the player will play an ordinary soldier, not a superhero.”
BlizzCon takes place next week, September 12th and 13th.
