Riot Games continues to develop an as-yet-unnamed MMORPG set in the MOBA League of Legends universe, but there are still few new details about the project. The company’s co-founder Mark Merrill said at PAX West 2026 that within the studio, development has been nicknamed “the search for the Holy Grail.” He said that the team understands players’ expectations and the main issue is whether the plan can be implemented in the finished game.
“Many brave knights will die in search of the Holy Grail, but still we must move forward.”“When describing Riot Games’ attitude towards the project, Merrill said. He admitted that it is not easy to maintain such an attitude in a large-scale company, but believes that the team is doing a pretty good job and is optimistic about the future.”
The League of Legends MMO received its first official confirmation in 2020. One of the first public leads on the project was Greg Street, but he admitted in 2022 that the game’s release could not be guaranteed. Street left Riot Games in 2023, and in March 2024 the company announced an overhaul of its direction. Merrill explained the decision, saying that the original version wasn’t that different from existing MMORPGs.
After the reboot, Fabrice Condominas of the Bioware team, who was responsible for the Omega add-on for Mass Effect 3, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, became the development lead. Riot Games also continues to strengthen its team with experts with experience developing large-scale MMORPGs. Among them are former Blizzard employees who worked on World of Warcraft, including producer Raymond Bartosz and combat designer Brian Hollinka.
After the reboot, Riot Games barely talked about the project anymore. In March 2024, Merrill Lynch made it clear that the team would remain in the shadows for several years while it sought a new direction. Now Riot’s official website still says that this MMO is under development, and the company continues to recruit experts for the project. There’s no release date or even release year yet.
