Google Research, in collaboration with researchers at HHMI Janelia Campus, has created the first complete digital map of the brain and central nervous system of the adult fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). To transmit all the details, scientists used artificial intelligence algorithms to combine millions of two-dimensional images into a 3D structure. Engineers made this model play Doom.

Furthermore, almost immediately after the results were published, developers began using the resulting models not only for scientific experiments but also for training models to play video games. So software engineer Alex Wormuth demonstrated Try Doom. In its implementation, sensory neurons are stimulated every frame of the game, and the activity of the nerve cells is then compared to game actions. The resulting lesion further stimulates two PPL101 dopamine cells, which act as reinforcers. The experiments are accompanied by open source code, making it possible to observe the learning process in real time.
Another developer, Jessica Paquette, conducted a similar test on Super Mario 64, and the results showed short filmMario repeatedly flies up and crashes into walls, demonstrating the early stages of model training. Puckett also released the project’s source code, noting that it was built entirely using OpenAI’s flagship GPT Astra agent model.
