Robotaxis are roaming the streets of London. Uber declarethe British capital can now offer rides in self-driving cars thanks to a partnership with British company Wayve.

Customers in the city who book a ride with UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Electric can now be assigned a Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with Wayve self-driving technology. Passengers will receive a notification that they have been assigned a robotaxi – and people will have the opportunity to decline the service and travel in a traditional car. The project has previously faced serious regulatory hurdles – Uber only received a license to operate self-driving cars in August and has so far required a driver in the car to monitor the situation. It will be some time before companies are allowed to operate fully autonomous vehicles.
The price of traveling in a robotaxi is the same as a regular car. From this point of view, the only difference is that even though there is a driver controller in the cabin, the app does not provide tips. Uber already operates self-driving fleets in Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Austin; Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area will join them in the foreseeable future. Uber and Wayve plan to collaborate – self-driving Nissan cars could soon start driving in Tokyo.
