Xbox disc-to-digital: Major publishers apparently taking a stance

Microsoft’s ambitious efforts to bridge the gap between physical storage media and purely digital platforms have encountered significant headwinds in the publishing world. At the end of August 2026, the American company began testing the so-called “disc to digital” system on the Xbox Insider network. This feature is designed to allow Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S physical disc owners to redeem a full digital license for their account and play games without plugging in the drive.

On paper, this seemed like a groundbreaking bridge to a purely digital console future, however, testing revealed a huge gap. According to angry users and cross-platform repository reports, major industry giants such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco have now apparently blocked the service entirely. When trying to digitize the corresponding game, players will encounter a sudden error message indicating that the game in question is not participating in the Digital Licensing Program.

It’s estimated that the rebuff from well-known publishers will affect hundreds of millions of sellers of the past two generations of consoles. Games such as Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Far Cry 5, Elden Ring, Kingdom Hearts 3, or newer Sonic games simply cannot be converted to digital licenses during their beta testing phase. Anyone hoping to future-proof their physical gaming range ahead of a possible hardware switch to digital-only console models will be disappointed for the time being.

Microsoft itself emphasized upfront that functionality for the feature was still in development, but a clear error message suggested that legal and licensing decisions depended on the respective third-party manufacturers.

There is intense industry speculation about the publisher’s motives. Industry experts suspect there are complex licensing friction points as well as monetary interests. At Ubisoft, overlap with its own subscription system Ubisoft+ or automatic linking to the PC platform could cause legal hurdles. Other providers are simply concerned that simple digitization of used games may slow down the resale of digital remasters or purchases in regular stores.

The fact that Sega and Square Enix – which have been open to platform features like Xbox Play Anywhere in the past – are distancing themselves from the program is particularly difficult for the community.

The controversy shines a light on the downsides of moving away from physical media. Although Sony has announced that it will gradually abandon optical disc drives in PlayStation hardware in the future, Microsoft is trying to establish a compromise in converting optical discs to digital. However, only if the major players in the industry come together can this model serve as a proven solution for preserving your game collection. Neither Ubisoft, Square Enix, or Microsoft have officially commented on the cancellation.
