After months of speculation and a previous leak of data from South American ratings agencies, Nintendo has revealed the truth. During a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, the company officially announced the next chapter in the action-adventure series that fans have been eagerly awaiting: Metroid: Greed. The new 2D branch will be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027. As a direct sequel to the famous Metroid: Fear, the game follows the classic gameplay principles but takes a dark direction in both narrative and mechanics. Samus Alain must defend his position on a threatening planet where the rule is eat and be eaten.
The reveal provides concrete insight into the bounty hunter’s new abilities. Gameplay follows the aftermath of a devastating event on the planet ZDR and gives Samus new Metroid powers, allowing her to defeat enemies and devour organic matter to absorb their properties, defenses, or environmental advantages.
In addition to dynamic movement, the developers are also promising further development of Metroid Dread’s fast combat system. The advanced hardware architecture of Nintendo Switch 2 was used not only to ensure smooth frame rates, but also to achieve complex lighting and particle effects in organic planting areas.
The January 2027 launch date strategically follows the Japanese manufacturer’s packed launch calendar. In addition to the regular standard edition, Nintendo also announced the launch of a physical special edition containing an art book and steel book, as well as a new amiibo set, which will be released at the same time.
Following the success of its direct predecessors, the plan underscores the core position of the 2D Main Series and the 3D Prime Series in Nintendo’s next-generation console lineup. The announced release date of early 2027 gives the development team remaining time to fine-tune enemy design and balance level design.
