Nintendo has finally kept its long-standing hints about the Switch 2 alive. New firmware 23.0.0 adds support for VRR when connecting the console to a TV, a feature owners of the device have been waiting for since its release.
Nintendo initially announced VRR for handheld mode, then confirmed the technology wouldn’t work when connected to a docking station. Later, independent testing showed the technical feasibility of its implementation, while a job opening from the company hinted that work on the feature is still ongoing. Now you no longer have to guess.
After the update, Switch 2 will be able to display at a rate that matches current game performance, as long as the game and TV support it. To activate, you will also need to update the dock firmware. A separate VRR section appears in the console settings, and it is possible to check the video signal parameters supported by the TV.
The firmware also brings other changes: full data transfer between two Switch 2s, new game chat functionality, special features to support Brazilian Portuguese, saving audio settings individually for each TV, and additional settings for portable mode. But the main focus of the update is still VRR – now that developers have more freedom when dealing with frame rates, players can expect smoother graphics.
