The project, called Gley Lancer: Overdrive, combines the spirit of the original game with new pixel art and music, improved gameplay, expanded multiplayer, additional modes and features.
The minute-long gameplay trailer accompanying the announcement of Gley Lancer: Overdrive showcases key visual and system innovations, as well as the 4:3 aspect ratio preserved for authenticity.
They promise a new Overdrive mechanic (providing a temporary shield that can be used against enemies), dynamic environments, new animations, redrawn cutscenes, multiple difficulty levels, and optional support for the 16:9 format.
Gley Lancer: Overdrive will be released in 2027 on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo MVS arcade. Public demonstrations will be available at Tokyo Game Show 2026 from September 17th to 21st.
The story of “Gley Lancer” takes place in 2025. The player plays the role of pilot Lucia Kabrok, who hijacks a prototype Gley Lancer fighter jet and sets out to track down her father, who was abducted by aliens.
For its first 26 years, the original Gley Lancer remained exclusive to Japan (fans had to rely on amateur translators), but in 2008 it became available in other countries thanks to the release of the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console service.
