The team at games portal GamesRadar+, together with research company YouGov, present the results of a massive survey conducted for the launch of new podcast G+RLS.
The survey results show that 48% of female PC and console gamers surveyed in the United States and the United Kingdom feel that gaming culture does not accept or represent them well. Among console owners, this number rises to 53%, and among competitive shooter enthusiasts, this number rises to 56%.
The study also addressed online safety and anonymity issues: 19% of respondents used a gender-neutral avatar, 22% only voice chatted with trusted friends, and another 19% avoided voice communication entirely. The survey also found that due to the ongoing stigma, only 46% of gamers surveyed publicly used the term to identify themselves, although 60% had no problem discussing their hobby with friends and colleagues. It is to overcome these barriers and discuss gaming from a female perspective that the team launched the two-week G+RLS podcast.
