Earlier this month, enthusiasts discovered references to an unreleased game controller in iOS code. Now, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has confirmed the news, adding that the iPhone maker has been working on these devices for quite some time.
Apple has been selling game controllers like the Backbone and SteelSeries Nimbus+ on the App Store for some time. It looks like the company is now ready to take a piece of the iPhone controller market. Snippets found in iOS code reveal that Apple is developing two controllers with model IDs T6502 and T1057. Both devices reportedly come with familiar controls like the D-pad and analog sticks, and also feature vibration motors. The presence of built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes has not been ruled out, but what the controller will look like remains a mystery.
Gurman said Apple may release an iPhone controller under the Beats brand, and the project will be overseen by Beats executives. Beats accessories are generally not aimed at the high end of the market, but rather at the more affordable end of the market. As such, they are made from cheaper materials and components than the more premium Apple brands suggest. Notably, Apple or Beats-branded game controllers could have a positive impact on the gaming ecosystem on Apple TV 4K and increase audience engagement with the emergence of increasingly advanced AAA games on iOS and macOS.
