Christopher Nolan’s new epic film “The Odyssey” has set a record for Universal Pictures in just eight weeks of release, becoming the biggest box office success in the company’s 114-year history.
By the end of the weekend, the film starring Matt Damon will have grossed $601.2 million domestically and $1.083 billion internationally. The total global box office has reached 1.68 billion US dollars. Meanwhile, The Odyssey recently regained the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office in its eighth week, making it the most successful film of Nolan’s career.
The film’s achievements don’t stop there. “The Odyssey” became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and the highest-grossing IMAX movie of all time. Additionally, even though the film is based on an ancient story that’s roughly three thousand years old, it’s the first original film since 2009 to surpass $1 billion at the box office outside the United States without sequel status.
Success is especially important to Donna Langley, who brought the director to Universal Pictures after Nolan left Warner Bros. in 2021. After Oppenheimer, the studio was hit hard again. By 2026, Universal Pictures has controlled 26% of the global film market, with box office revenue approaching US$5 billion, becoming the first film company to exceed US$4 billion in global box office and US$3 billion in international box office.
