Massively leaked internal documents reveal the strict terms of the deal between Marvel and Sony: In order to retain development rights for games in the X-Men universe, Marvel’s Wolverine must sell at least 6 million copies in its first year on PS5 and PC. If it fails, the contract could be terminated and Sony would suffer additional losses.
The situation was compounded by mixed reviews from critics – the game scored a 77 on Metacritic, making it Insomniac’s lowest-rated project in a decade, sparking controversy over its gameplay and character design. Meanwhile, the exclusivity deal runs for a full decade, and the studio’s plans include other mutant-related projects, the fate of which now hinges on the commercial success of “Wolverine.”
