Intel launched this open source project in 2023, emphasizing that the One Mono font is oriented to the work needs and specific situations of software creators who analyze large amounts of text information. Intel first archived the project on GitHub last week, but decided to revive it days later. The company was forced to save money and thus cut many open source projects, but One Mono avoided that fate due to some unclear motivations.
The eponymous typeface was originally designed with the ease of visual perception of text in mind. All characters in this font have the same horizontal width, the height difference between uppercase and lowercase letters is clearly visible, and similar characters such as “e” and “G” are also written in a way to highlight individual characteristics. Testing of the font involved experts with severe visual impairments who pointed out problematic issues and Intel worked to fix the bugs and make the font as readable as possible. Along the way, variations of the written characters using this font were developed, including italics and bold. Open access allows everyone to download the font files and modify them themselves. Although the project hasn’t made much progress since last year, Intel’s refusal to archive it on GitHub may indicate continued interest from developers.
