The announcement of World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon 2026 raised many questions from players about how the new mode would fit into the overall chronology of the universe. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield clarified during the panel that the project exists in a separate “time capsule” and has no connection to modern-day “Retail’s” ongoing storyline. According to the developers, this approach gives the team complete creative freedom without the need to tie alternate story threads to current events such as add-ons midnight.
At the same time, the authors emphasize that they do not intend to completely rewrite the established history and foundation of the original strategy: key events leading up to the launch World of Warcraft Vanilla will remain unchanged. Players who enjoy the current version of the game may not worry about having to learn new content to understand the general setting, since all World of Warcraft: Eternal events take place in an offline space.
