The developers of the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online have shared details of the new “Rumor” mechanic, which will appear in the game on September 28 with the start of massive update 51 and the first season. The new system will provide players with a unique investigative experience that combines story-driven mysteries with classic treasure hunt gameplay.
ESO Assistant Design Director Jason Barnes said the main goal of the innovation was to bring the spirit of “old school” missions back into the game. Rumors completely lacks the usual prompt interface: the player is not told exactly where to go or what to do. The developers hope that users will unlock logic, decipher evidence on their own, and interact more actively with the world of Tamriel.
The system will have a separate tab in the task log. There will be unresolved rumors and clues indicating where to begin the investigation.
There are three types of tasks. “Whispers” are the simplest and most straightforward; “Conspiracies” (plots) require the use of logic; complex conspiracies will force players to dig deeper and connect different facts together.
For successfully uncovering secrets, you can earn coins, consumables, items from sets, and even special upgrades for the mysterious Prowler’s Amulet Necklace.
