
Xiaomi XRING 03 may be more interesting than ordinary mobile chips. Its graphics core includes support for the BCn texture format, which is not found in other ARM Mali implementations and removes an important limitation for emulating Windows games.
This information was found in Vulkan reports reviewed by Notebookcheck. XRING 03 uses ARM processors and graphics designs such as Google’s Tensor and MediaTek Dimensity chips, but the standard implementation of these GPUs does not support BCn. This is one of the obstacles when running Windows games through emulation: having to use additional software to handle the necessary textures, or even facing incompatibilities.
The important point is that BCn by itself does not make XRING 03 faster in games. Its main advantage is compatibility. The fact that Xiaomi has added similar features to its Mali implementation that aren’t typically found on ARM chips may bring the XRING 03 closer to the Snapdragon in terms of running PC projects through emulation.
All that remains now is to test it all in practice. Modern mobile processors are already capable of running some AAA games, but Windows emulation is still a difficult task that requires not only suitable graphics but also significant processing power. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, for example, has already demonstrated this potential, although it requires efficient cooling under heavy loads. Whether XRING 03 can repeat this trick still needs to be tested through actual testing.
