In 2024, Hideo Kojima and Playstation announced the launch of PHYSINT. In early September, news broke that Sony had decided to stop funding the project, and that the Xbox team would now take over. Announcing the changes, the PlayStation team released a statement calling it a “difficult decision” but saying they have great admiration for the game itself.
Hideo Kojima himself is now being interviewed washington post Here’s how the Playstation situation developed after the PHYSINT game was cancelled:
- Sony executives did not come to Kojima Productions to announce the termination of cooperation. According to Hideo Kojima, the announcement was made via Zoom as part of a scheduled meeting.
- The game designer pointed out that the PlayStation team did not give any reason for abandoning PHYSINT.
- Kojima was concerned that the studio might go out of business if the deal fell through. He emphasized that he did not want to let down employees again, as he had done before at PT.
- Kojima Productions was informed of the changes the day before they were publicly announced.
- Hideo Kojima has no intention of conflict with PlayStation. He said that while Sony’s decision was shocking and disappointing, “the long-term attachment to the brand remains.”
PHYSINT currently has no release date. The game is expected to be released after the release of OD, another project co-developed by Kojima Productions and Xbox.
