The A20 Pro cools so well that even liquid nitrogen doesn't do it any favors

Liquid nitrogen would normally make smartphone cooling a farce, but Apple’s A20 Pro is suddenly almost ready to handle such extreme situations. In Geekbench 6, the increase is very small, which seems particularly unusual compared to competitors.

The experiment, conducted by YouTube channel Geekerwan, compared the performance of several mobile chips with traditional cooling and the use of liquid nitrogen. The A20 Pro only improved by 0.76% in the single-thread test and 2.49% in the multi-thread test. In comparison, last year’s A19 Pro accelerated 5.77% and 10.06% respectively.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 multi-thread performance increased by 12.62%, and the leader in the experiment was the MediaTek Dimensity 9500. After extreme heat dissipation, its single-thread test performance increased by 9.14%, and multi-thread test performance increased by 12.66%. It turns out that liquid nitrogen actually helped other wafers more significantly.

One of the reasons for the A20 Pro’s modest gain is the new WMCM layout, where the DRAM is placed on the sides of the die instead of on top. The enlarged evaporation chamber also provides additional temperature margin. Granted, Geekbench 6 doesn’t show real long-term performance, so final conclusions should be made after prolonged loads, such as in games or a series of consecutive tests.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 owners are tired of watching their processors throttle due to overall system limitations. Experiments to remove it have allowed us to significantly increase energy consumption, but with increased productivity come heat, noise and new causes of concern.

The beautiful M6 Pro is too good to be true

The M6 Pro’s early Geekbench 7 scores look impressive, with nearly 5,000 points on the single-thread test and strong multi-thread scores. But it’s too early to get excited about the new Apple chips – it looks like what we’re seeing is a fake.
