Polish development studio Rebel Wolves has revealed the financial details of the production of its first game, Blood of the Dawn Treader. The dark fantasy role-playing game was released in September with a pure development budget of around $40 million, a figure that’s surprisingly modest compared to the over-budgeted AAA productions that plague today’s gaming industry. The first work on concepts, prototypes and recruitment of technical workers begins in 2022, with the first year being self-financed by studio manager Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. At the end of 2022, NetEase joined with 26% of the shares and provided the remaining budget, and then full main production began at the end of 2023.
The mention of the budget highlights the commercial and commercial success of the Warsaw studio. Blood of the Dawn Treader sold over a million copies within days of release, proving profitable shortly after release.
Tomaszkiewicz explained that the studio initially hoped to keep the employee cap at around 90 employees, but the team grew organically to 160 employees during development in order to cope with the growing ambitions of the game world without placing an unreasonable additional burden on employees. In order to meet the project release window of September 2026 while avoiding health damage caused by working overtime, management strictly followed the original design concept from the prototype stage.
Close collaboration with publisher Bandai Namco has also enabled the planned marketing structure, with $40 million being spent purely on the physical and technical development of the game, while global marketing costs are handled separately.
The success of “Rebel Wolf” is regarded by the industry as a lesson in efficient project management in the AA game field. By keeping production costs controllable, studios are able to significantly reduce financial risk for investors compared to large international productions. Given the fast return on investment, preparations for the successor are already underway in the background, while the core team continues to provide maintenance updates and content expansions for the main game.
Several games in the AA space have now become hugely successful with relatively modest development costs. In addition to Dawn Treader, examples of games in this category include Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2.
