The developer of Crimson Desert credits its proprietary Blackspace engine as one of the reasons Pearl Abyss is able to release games and major updates quickly. They argue that the transition to commercial technology could severely limit the speed of development.
Chief engineer Jin Hwan Kim and senior director of the graphics department Jin Ho Yoon said Pearl Abyss did not want to rely on third-party technology. Blackspace was created with the studio’s own approach in mind, so developers don’t have to wait for engine updates to get necessary features. This gives teams more control over the production and release of new features.

The new engine should also be more versatile than the technology used in Black Desert. The previous version was so closely associated with MMOs that it proved problematic in other types of applications. Blackspace was originally designed with different games and platforms in mind, so in the future Pearl Abyss could theoretically even be used for FPS or TPS.
Against the background of the widespread use of Unreal Engine 5, “Crimson Desert” does stand out with its own technical foundation. The developers have released several major updates for the game, including major plot changes. The next big challenge will be the “Drawing Unknown” expansion pack, which will be released on October 15th and will add new features and content to the game.
