Sony has filed for a new patent that would allow PlayStation 5 owners to use its DualSense controller as a payment device. According to documents discovered by Patentlyze, players can make a purchase by holding their smartphone close to the controller, which will then prompt a pop-up to complete the transaction on the mobile device. In addition, one of the solutions in the patent shows the ability to purchase gift cards by placing a bank card on the game controller.
Such a solution can be a convenient payment method for users who do not want to save their card details directly on the console. However, as with any patent filing, the technology is not yet guaranteed to appear in the final version of the software – Sony may implement the feature in the future or abandon it entirely.
