It’s not trying to replicate the massive open world of the original game, but more compact and mostly linear dungeon crawling. Players will take on a stand-alone adventure with its own locations and sequence of events, which is designed for relatively short passages.
At the same time, the developers made some changes to the activities related to the user project details. For example, there’s no usual minimap here. Instead, Batifly implements its own teleportation system between accessible areas. However, this shouldn’t be a serious limitation for Sunless Castle itself: due to the linear structure of the adventure, there’s really no need to constantly move between remote parts of the map.
The mod is already launchable, but the author is still working on it. Some announced features are not yet implemented. Especially the current version lacks a complete camp system. According to the creators, its implementation turned out to be much more complex than initially expected, so corresponding features will come later.
There are other restrictions. The campaign already has dialogue with NPCs, but the mission log system has not yet received the necessary support. Players shouldn’t expect full quest tracking in the usual Baldur’s Gate 3 format. Therefore, you have to pay closer attention to the dialogue and remember the objectives of certain tasks yourself.
At the same time, Sunless Bastion supports Baldur’s Gate 3’s co-op mode, so you can try out the adventure with friends, which fits well with the concept of the original tabletop mod. Dungeons and Dragons. Given the relatively short length of the campaign, this could be a convenient option for co-op play between larger games.
The emergence of projects like this shows how actively Baldur’s Gate 3 modding continues to develop a few years after its release. Larian Studios provided the community with the tools to create their own modifications, and players gradually used them to develop content that significantly expanded the functionality of the original RPG.
Sunless Citadel is just one example of how the community has maintained interest in Baldur’s Gate 3 without the involvement of Larian itself. If the author continues to develop the project and adds camps, a mission tracking system, and other planned features, the custom campaign could become a more complete standalone adventure for fans of the game.
