If you believe previous publications, Chinese authorities have long been pushing companies with state involvement to more actively use local AI chips in their own computing infrastructure. Private companies in China can enjoy more freedom, but they also focus on the same Huawei accelerator as DeepSeek.

according to business times Citing The Information, DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng stated at a staff meeting that the company will make more use of computing accelerators from local suppliers such as Huawei. By the fourth quarter of this year, DeepSeek will receive a new batch of proprietary accelerators from Huawei for training the first company’s AI model.
Despite Huawei’s chip supply issues, and it’s not easy to produce the required quantities under Western sanctions, DeepSeek’s founders see huge growth potential in these accelerators. He said that in a few years, Huawei’s artificial intelligence chips will be able to catch up with Nvidia’s products. At the same time, DeepSeek itself cannot give up imported accelerators quickly. In May this year, the company’s founder said that training OpenAI solution-level artificial intelligence models may require up to 50,000 Nvidia GB300 accelerators. If you try to replace it with the Huawei Ascend 950 accelerator, the number of chips required will increase to 200,000.
It is said that DeepSeek is now training an AI model with 2 trillion parameters, which is almost one and a half times the 1.4 trillion parameters of the already released flagship V4 model. In the future, the company intends to create an AI model with 8 trillion parameters. The implementation of these plans depends largely on the availability not only of the AI chips themselves, but also of the storage chips and power sources. There are no details yet on which Huawei AI chips DeepSeek will receive next quarter, but the Ascend 950DT accelerator should be delivered before the end of this year. The Ascend 960DT accelerator will debut early next year.
