The idea behind the project is to allow users to quickly access important information, such as contact information, through these lightweight applications; Microsoft did not disclose the reason for the rejection. It’s important to stress that while the app itself will disappear, the data associated with it will remain. For example, contact information is already stored in the Microsoft 365 cloud, so the widget is just a way to access it.
The decision to remove applets is a bit surprising, as Microsoft has been actively implementing Copilot features into them; the company even announced new Copilot features for these apps with a “coming soon” label, but apparently that’s not going to happen now. In silent mode, these applications will no longer be installed, but they will not be automatically uninstalled. On a home computer, they are uninstalled as normal, but in an enterprise environment, administrators must manually uninstall them and configure Intune to stop deploying them.
For those who use them, Microsoft recommends switching to Outlook and Teams to work with calendars and contacts; to work with files, use the search field in Windows, Explorer, SharePoint, and OneDrive. Copilot AI Assistant continues to be a tool for quickly searching and accessing information. Given that these three widgets are just weeks away from being discontinued, security updates for them will no longer be released.
