Popular competitive shooter Quake Champions has officially ended its history as a free-to-play game. Studio id Software transitioned the game to a flat-fee $10 paid app status on Steam, refusing further content updates.
The main change is the complete abandonment of internal monetization: now all fighters are available to players immediately upon purchase, and skin shops and annoying loot boxes are a thing of the past.
Users who previously launched the project can receive the new version to their account for free, and recent purchases of premium currency can be refunded. While loyal fans who have spent years on cosmetics may find this act of generosity toward others off-putting, the game has eliminated the controversial elements of the service model.
