As the portal points out DSSO gamesmodder gabdeg adopted Nvidia’s RTX Remix platform, which uses path tracing to convert DirectX 8 and 9 games to run in GTA 2 (DirectX 6).
Corresponding modifications can be downloaded for free from the website’s repository GitHub. Video demonstrating path tracing in GTA 2 show GeForce evangelist Jacob Freeman.
This mod provides RTX Remix compatible rendering, light generation based on game events (explosions, fires, gunshots), dynamic time of day changes (Remix Plus), and emission maps for some textures.
All of this runs in 16:9 format (cars/pedestrians no longer appear or disappear at the edges of the screen) and 60 frames/second thanks to frame generation technology. There’s also a settings panel for adjusting lighting and time.
Since December 2004, the PC version of GTA 2 has been officially available for free. Initially, distribution took place on Rockstar Games’ own website, and since March 2020 you can “download the game” through the portalInternet Archive».
GTA 2 debuted on PC in October 1999 and in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast and Game Boy Color. The game sold over 2 million copies and became the last game in the series to feature a top-down perspective – starting with GTA III, the series moved to 3D.
