Elon Musk admitted that the current version of Grok is still inferior to the leading Anthropic model, but believes that this is a temporary gap. According to him, xAI has been around for about three years, while Anthropic has been developing its technology for six years.
In an interview with Chinese media, Musk said that Grok 4.7 is still a “workhorse” but not yet at the level of the recently launched Anthropic Opus 5.5. At the same time, the entrepreneur hopes to make up for this lag through the development of the agency platform Grok Bot, which he says is growing rapidly. The next version of Grok 4.8 should significantly improve the model’s capabilities and, according to Musk, will use about 2.5 trillion parameters.
I think we’ll probably catch up with the industry leaders sometime next year – probably then. At the same time, I think Grok is very useful in many ways. The Grok robot is a personal digital assistant; it’s popular and growing at about 100% every month, so it’s growing very fast.

Musk places special emphasis on practical engineering. He believes that Anthropic has created an AI that is good at software development, but does not yet have a model that is really good at “real engineering.” xAI intends to use data from SpaceX and Tesla to fill this gap. At the same time, Musk said that China can solve the problems of wafer production and photolithography in about two to three years. However, Frank Romund, head of Zeiss Semiconductor Division, previously estimated that China is about 15 years behind in modern EUV lithography technology.
