The action shooter, once considered the main successor to the battle royale genre, is now facing a major crisis. The decline in player interest in hardcore PvPvE elements and the loss of valuable loot have led to once-successful projects beginning to introduce a large number of PvE modes to retain their audiences.
A high-profile example is Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders, which lost a significant portion of its base upon release, while Bungie’s Marathon has long suffered. While the author of ARC Raiders plans to try to disable PvP entirely in October, the Bungie team is taking a more radical step. In order to save the project with extremely low online availability, the studio delayed the third season by three months to create a full-fledged standalone PvE experience and even a classic team deathmatch mode.
Such changes caused dissatisfaction among the hardcore community, who felt that the developers were following in the footsteps of casual audiences and undermining the original ideals of the genre. However, the decline in player retention has left creators with no choice: in order to escape the dangerous “mainstream Tarkov” model, the industry has gradually shifted its focus to more accessible cooperative models.
Let’s ask ourselves a rhetorical question: What exactly is preventing a PvE mode from being added to the game at launch? Afraid of finding out that this is your “pevepe” and only a bunch of pathetically irrepressible fans need to ruin other people’s games?
