The launch of Google’s new Googlebook laptops raises some questions: What happens to regular Chromebooks? The company announced that it will stop releasing ChromeOS updates in mid-2034. This date is consistent with plans previously mentioned in court documents, but has now been officially confirmed.

Chromebooks are supported for 10 years. If Chromebook support extends beyond 2034, Google assures education and enterprise administrators: “Google is ready to support your transition to Googlebook OS and has a drop-in migration path for many devices.”. For Googlebooks, the same 10-year update and security patch system as Chromebooks will apply, but the countdown starts from the release date of the processor installed in the system.
The document also reports that Googlebook management tools will appear in the second half of 2027. This means it will be a long time before the first enterprise Googlebook model appears. The upgrade authorization for Chrome Education and Enterprise editions is different from that of Googlebook. If IT administrators move Chromebooks to Googlebook OS or purchase new devices, they will need new entitlements. Google has not announced the terms of its offer.
The Googlebook’s operating system is more reminiscent of Android than ChromeOS. However, in the support document, Google emphasized its commitment to the interests of web developers despite supporting Android apps. The company stated: “We will continue to provide web application management capabilities for IT administrators and a powerful set of APIs for web developers.”.
The first batch of Googlebook devices are now available for pre-order and will go on sale on October 4th.
