Hyundai has launched the Ioniq V electric fastback in China, and the car isn’t just notable for its price, which starts at about $14,820. The new products also offer bold designs and a lifetime warranty on the vehicle and powertrain. Hyundai also promises to replace the battery with a brand new one if it degrades too quickly or spontaneously ignites. However, in the latter case, you will most likely have to replace the entire vehicle.

Hyundai takes advantage of China’s new safety and battery life requirements by offering a lifetime warranty to the first owner. The global version of the Ioniq 5 comes with a standard high-voltage battery warranty of 10 years or 160,000 kilometers, while the Chinese version of the Ioniq V comes with a lifetime warranty on the battery, electric motor and electronic control system.
In addition, the protection program exceeds industry standards: the battery can be completely replaced if the capacity loss exceeds 30% within the first eight years or 160,000 kilometers of use. The company also promises to replace the battery with a new one in the unlikely event of spontaneous combustion. Although as usual if an EV’s battery catches fire, the car itself is unlikely to be saved, so obviously Hyundai will have to replace the entire vehicle.
The automaker intends to extend the first-time owner lifetime warranty to all of its future electric vehicles in China.
The Ioniq V is 4900 mm long and has a wheelbase of 2900 mm. The car comes with front-wheel drive and has 250 Nm of torque across all trim levels. The power unit power can be selected from 140kW (equipped with CATL lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 53.48kWh and a CLTC cruising range of 540 kilometers) or 168kW (equipped with a battery with a capacity of 66.85kWh and a CLTC cruising range of 650km). Hyundai claims energy consumption of 11.1 kWh/100 km, with 20-minute DC fast charging capability.
The cabin features a 27-inch 4K resolution screen as well as removable physical volume and climate control units. The car features a front seat that reclines to a fully horizontal position. Nine airbags ensure safety. An air conditioning system with a heat pump is responsible for comfort. The rear trunk volume of this model is 465 liters.
There are artificial intelligence assistants from Doubao and Baidu, four-zone voice control, Dolby Atmos sound system, and navigation services from Baidu and Amap. Momenta’s driver assistance systems include highway navigation assistance and automatic parking functions. Parking space memory and city navigation functions are planned to be added later via over-the-air updates.
The Ioniq V is available in a variety of interesting exterior colors with pretentious names like Cyber Gold and Gamma Green. Hyundai offers five trim levels: 540 Pro, 540 Max, 540 Max+, 650 Max and 650 Max+. Versions with the Max+ Index are initially equipped with driver assistance systems. Pricing starts at $14,820 for the simplest modification.
Hyundai is not the first automaker to offer a lifetime warranty in China: Chery previously launched a similar option for early owners of its new electric vehicles, equipped with Rhino batteries that meet the world’s most stringent battery safety requirements, GB38031-2025. The new standard not only requires early warning of fire risks: it also requires that batteries do not catch fire or explode within two hours of thermal runaway, and that smoke does not enter the interior of the vehicle.
