Consumers demand Logitech refunds overpayments due to Trump tariffs

Amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with China, which has seen higher export tariffs announced almost weekly, companies such as Logitech have responded by significantly raising the prices of their products in the United States. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that these tariffs were illegal and manufacturers should be reimbursed. At the same time, the company itself is in no rush to refund customers, and the increased tariffs fall on the shoulders of customers. A class action lawsuit is currently pending to rectify this issue.

Last year, U.S. President Trump took advantage of the U.S. trade deficit with China to impose higher tariffs on products made in China and shipped to the United States. The move is expected to force companies such as Apple that assemble devices in China to move production to the United States.

The idea was doomed to fail. 9to5Mac writes that the U.S. lacks the manufacturing infrastructure and most importantly the expertise and skilled workforce needed to support consumer electronics manufacturing at the scale of a major brand.

Trump insists the tariffs will be paid by China. But in reality, the increased tariffs must be paid by the American brands that import their goods. The increased costs are ultimately passed on to consumers in the form of price increases. At their peak, these tariffs reached 145%. Logitech, for example, raised prices on about half of its products by 25%.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Trump did not have the authority to unilaterally impose these tariffs and ordered the return of funds paid by U.S. companies. This has already happened. The problem is that these costs are ultimately paid by consumers through higher prices. There is no indication that the affected companies plan to return funds to customers.

Law firm CPM has filed a class-action lawsuit against Logitech, seeking refunds for those forced to overpay due to price increases during the tariff period.

“Millions of consumers buy everyday items — mice, keyboards, webcams — and pay invisible taxes that the Supreme Court has ruled should not be levied. […] Logitech keeps every last penny for itself. This is not a reallocation of costs. This is a misappropriation of funds.”the class action lawsuit states.

If this claim succeeds, it could set a very interesting precedent.
