Sea of Thieves turns 8 years old this year, and Rare Studios continues to actively support and develop it using a seasonal model. The developers at Rare heard their voices and announced that they will soon be able to significantly reduce the size of the game.
within New Developer Diary Rare Studio said it expects to reduce the space occupied by the Sea of Thieves game by at least half, and for the version without 4K textures, the reduction will be around 30%. Currently, the game takes up approximately 116 GB on Xbox Series X and 130 GB on PC.
We’ve listened to your feedback and understand that storage space continues to be an issue for players. The scale of gaming has reached a point where downsizing has become one of the most common requests. So the team has been working hard to find optimization opportunities, and the good news is that we are confident of significant reductions.
Rare hasn’t released exact final numbers yet, but the studio is confident it can reduce file size by at least 50%. For versions without 4K textures, such as those on Xbox Series S and Xbox One, the developers expect the file size to be reduced by approximately 30%.
Rare has yet to announce a release date for the updated version. The optimized version will be available first to members of the Sea of Thieves Insiders program, with changes later rolled out to all users. When migrating to a new archive structure, players will need to re-download the entire project. The studio emphasized that despite this optimization, all content in the game will be retained.
