Amid rumors that the industry may abandon discs in the coming years, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the remake of the final installment in the trilogy, Final Fantasy 7: Revelations, has spoken out in support of fans of physical media. In a recent interview, he admitted that he fully agrees with the position of those players who adhere to the “no disc, no purchase” principle. Hamaguchi said that despite the intense pressure for digital distribution, he made every effort and used his position at the company to achieve the complete release of the final chapter of the trilogy on physical media.
At the same time, developers point out that the modern industry is moving towards a model where boxed versions completely lose data and contain only the startup code. Given the large scale of the project, which required approximately 200 GB of free space, releasing the game on physical media required difficult technical compromises. Hamaguchi said he hopes fans understand the difficult decision that was made and appreciate the team’s efforts to preserve the classic format for collectors.
