Following the revival of the iconic Atari 2600 and Mattel Intellivision consoles, Atari is bringing to market a replica of one of its personal computers that debuted 43 years ago. The 800XL is an 8-bit computer with a full keyboard that can be used for both gaming and BASIC programming.

The Atari 800XL is an all-in-one replica of the original 8-bit computer. The project is being implemented jointly with the game developer and publisher Plaion. While most retro tech enthusiasts will likely use the device for gaming, the new 800XL retains the original’s built-in mechanical keyboard – useful for those who want to write their own games and applications in Atari BASIC.

The computer is equipped with a full-featured cartridge slot that is compatible with most games for the Atari 400, 800, XL and XE series systems. At the same time, the revived 800XL model is capable of running any software created for these older 8-bit systems, including from a flash drive.

For those who don’t have a collection of old cartridges, the 800XL comes with 25 games built into its memory, including big hits like Asteroids, Centipede, Berzerk, Missile Command and Millipede. Modern gamers will be deeply amazed by the presence in games of as many as four save slots for the entire game and the rewind function, which allows you to rewind time up to 40 seconds.

The device also has modern interfaces, including an HDMI port and four USB-A connectors for connecting flash drives and peripheral devices. The kit also includes an updated version of the classic Atari joystick, making it more functional with the addition of eight action and control buttons.

The Atari 800XL is now available for pre-order, priced at $246.60, with shipping scheduled to begin in April 2027.
