Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has called for an “emergency brake” on AI development. He suggested changing the approach to development by initially treating AI models as “compromised” and taking the necessary precautions from the start.

In his post on Platform X, Microsoft’s CEO laid out his views on the risks associated with advanced AI models and how to counter them.
Nadella said it is no longer acceptable to view AI, which he calls “superintelligence,” as “a collection of nested black boxes” whose advice and actions we simply accept or reject. He called for a more transparent system in which models can be monitored and, if necessary, limited, and their work will leave behind “tamper-proof evidence that is human readable”.
As noted by the resource The Vergemany of the Microsoft CEO’s proposals echo those of others in the AI industry: timely incident disclosure, independent audits, verifiable data and containment mechanisms.
Moreover, in the last point he went a little further than his colleagues, saying: “We have to assume that the model can be compromised and keep it under control from the very beginning. Think of it as an emergency brake: an authorized person should always be able to pause the model or stop it completely mid-task. More advanced models will require more advanced deterrence technologies – we need to develop common standards for them.”
