Google search errors rarely go unnoticed, especially when they involve big names or events. In its latest event, the service mistakenly announced the death of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Google search users discovered an error while searching for information about the person responsible for OpenAI. As usual, search results include his name, photo, and a brief summary from Wikipedia. Next to his birthday, the date of his death was noted – the card said Sam Altman died on August 12, 2026. The public was confused at this time as no major publications reported this. It was later confirmed that this was a mistake and not entirely Google’s fault. This was most likely caused by an edit to Wikipedia by a vandal, who was pronounced dead.
Google’s automated systems gather information from trusted sources, including Wikipedia, when generating search results. On last check, the system may have detected this edit and displayed the date of his death along with information about Ultraman. Google fixed the bug immediately. On social media, the company thanked people for reporting the issue. The Wikipedia page has now been updated and Google has confirmed that Sam Altman’s fake death date is no longer displayed next to his name.
