The “Stop Killing Games” initiative launched after Ubisoft’s “The Crew” servers were shut down is at risk of completely collapsing. Dr Ceila Pontin, a gaming policy expert at Flux Digital Policy, said the activists’ demands may be legally impossible.
In a recent interview, Pontin pointed out that current legislation and user agreements already regulate the scenario of shutting down game services, and copyright owners have the legal right to terminate access to purchased items.
The main problem remains the vast complexity of copyright: video games are made up of hundreds of intertwined licenses for code, graphics, and voice acting, making it illegal to simply hand over canceled projects to fans. Although this issue is being discussed seriously by European regulators, players should consider the strict limitations of existing legislation.
