Square Enix confirmed the release date for Kingdom Hearts IV at the D23 event. The new game in the series will be released on Xbox Series X | S, Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC at the end of 2027. Along with the release date, the developers also showed off a new trailer, in which they first announced the world based on Disney and Pixar’s The Secret of Coco.
The plot of “Kingdom Hearts IV” will continue Sora’s story. After the events of Kingdom Hearts III, the hero finds himself in Quadratum, a modern, realistic version of Tokyo. Sora must find a way back to his world, while Donald and Goofy travel to Hell in search of information about his whereabouts. The developer noted that Quadratum will be a major location in Kingdom Hearts IV early on. It is understood that Sora’s apartment in the Minami Aoyama area will be used as a departure base.
Square Enix also shared some details about the development of the game’s combat system. Sora will be able to combine physical attacks with magic, create move combos and change weapons to gain different abilities. They’re also promising more vertical gameplay in this installment of the series.
Kingdom Hearts IV is created on Unreal Engine 5. The project was first proposed in April 2022 and was originally planned to be released in 2025.
