Not every iteration of a mobile processor involves a breakthrough in performance or energy efficiency – sometimes it’s more important to support an established platform by adapting to new market conditions. This is what happened with the new one MediaTek Helio G99+.

The updated MediaTek Helio G99+ processor is almost indistinguishable from the Helio G99 processor launched in 2022, which went through multiple iterations. The new product is also produced using TSMC’s 6 nm process technology, but provides important improvements – in addition to LPDDR4X memory (up to 4266 Mbit/s), it also supports LPDDR5X (up to 5500 Mbit/s).
The rest remains the same: two Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz, six Cortex-A55 clocked at 2.0 GHz, a Mali-G57 MC2 graphics card, support for UFS 2.2 drives, a camera with a resolution of up to 108 megapixels, and a built-in Cat-13 4G modem. 4G-only chips are targeted at markets where low price is more important than maximum performance and functionality.
In the current situation, support for new memories is relevant: DRAM vendors are now shifting production lines to HBM and DDR5/LPDDR5X, while LPDDR4X is in short supply. Therefore, the updated version of MediaTek Helio G99+ will provide greater flexibility to smartphone manufacturers. MediaTek previously released the Helio G100 and G200 processors, which came with slight changes compared to the same basic G99.
