CD Projekt Red makes a surprise reveal of a major update to its hit RPG at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The developer has shown off the first trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, while also revealing the release date.
The updated version will launch on September 29, 2026, and will be distributed as a free update to owners of the original game. Meanwhile, CD Projekt RED plans to not only update the graphics: the remaster will also receive redesigned interface elements, game balance changes, improved navigation, and support for modern image scaling technology.
So, more than ten years after the release of “The Witcher 3” CD Project RED Returning once again to one of the most successful games in the company’s history.
What changes will happen to The Witcher 3 Remake
The original Witcher 3: Wild Hunt debuted in May 2015 and was the final major chapter in Geralt of Rivia’s story. Later, the game received two large-scale plot supplements—— Hearts of Stone и Blood and Wineand tons of free content.
Despite its age, the role-playing game was still a commercial success. According to the latest data from CD Projekt RED, global sales of “The Witcher 3” across all platforms have exceeded 65 million copies.
Game owners will now be able to upgrade to the newer version for free. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is coming soon September 29, 2026. This update will include:
- main game;
- Heart of Stone;
- blood and wine;
- graphics improvements;
- Redesigned menu navigation;
- Updated skill tree;
- Changes in monster behavior and balance;
- Support modern upgrade technology;
- Cross-platform support for modification;
- Play anywhere, anytime with Xbox.
In addition to the platforms on which it has been released, the remake will also be officially released on Nintendo Switch 2, and the PC version will also appear on Battle.net.
Monsters will become more dangerous
One of the most interesting changes is the adjustment of opponent behavior.
CD Projekt RED intends to rethink the balance and behavior of the monsters Geralt encounters during his travels in the Northern Kingdoms. This means that battles familiar to game veterans may require completely different tactics.
So far, the developers haven’t revealed the full list of changes, so it’s unclear if it’s just tweaking numerical parameters, or if certain types of monsters will get entirely new behavior models.
For a game that many fans have played dozens of times, even this change is pretty noticeable.
Supports DLSS 4.5, FSR 4 and modern platforms
The technical part of the remake will also be significantly updated. CD Projekt RED has confirmed support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 4, so owners of modern graphics cards can look forward to higher resolutions and performance.
Separate improvements are provided for PlayStation 5 Pro and Nintendo Switch 2. This looks particularly interesting in the context of CD Projekt RED’s recent work Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition For Switch 2, developers have incorporated modern expansion technology. Therefore, how much technical improvements the studio will make to The Witcher 3 on the new Nintendo console remains one of the most curious questions.
Additionally, the remaster will support cross-platform mods, which could greatly expand the community experience.
Will Song of the Past be Geralt’s last adventure?
Along with showing off the remaster, CD Projekt RED also shared more details about another project in the Witcher 3 universe – the Song of the Past add-on.
After multiple hints, the developers finally confirmed that Geralt will be heading to a new region called Leiden.
This place should be significantly different from the area players are already familiar with. The region has been described as a land filled with local folklore and traditional festivals, but behind the festive atmosphere lies a darker secret.
According to preliminary information, “Song of the Past” may be Geralt’s last adventure as the protagonist.
After that, the baton will be passed to Ciri, who has already been confirmed as the protagonist. The Witcher 4.
Therefore, it seems that CD Projekt RED is gradually distancing itself from Geralt’s story. While Song of the Past will continue to exist within the series’ universe, it may be the last full-length Witcher-centric adventure game.
The wizard and diablo will meet
The news isn’t over yet for the franchise. CD Projekt RED also announced a partnership with Blizzard Entertainment. In the future, “Diablo 4” will receive exclusive content from “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”
Details of the crossover are currently being kept secret. All we know is that a larger collaborative showcase will be held during BlizzCon on September 12-13, 2026.
So CD Projekt RED actually made a couple of big announcements surrounding The Witcher 3 at Gamescom: fans can expect a free remaster of the classic RPG, new content for Geralt’s latest adventure, and another unusual crossover – this time with The Witcher 3 Diablo 4.
The remastered version will be available on September 29th, and The Witcher 3 owners will not need to purchase it again.
