Game director Dan Lind, best known for Hearts of Iron IV, has published the first developer diary for post-apocalyptic global strategy Afterlife.
The game takes users to the semi-procedural ruins of North America a century after a global disaster called “The Fall.” The program combines procedural generation with a detailed story in the spirit of Stellaris, asking you to lead a squad of survivors as they explore the remnants of a highly developed past and build a new civilization from the ashes.
Gameplay is based on five key principles: adapting to changing conditions (adapting to survive), seeking lost knowledge (rediscovering), forming a unique society (shaping your society), steadily increasing depth at the beginning without overloading, and maximum immersion as opposed to traditional abstraction.
Lind said Afterworld combines the scale of a grand strategy game with elements of survival simulation and settlement building, giving players a more intimate and detailed scale, including convoy attacks and bunker exploration. Subscribers to the official newsletter can already receive a free digital comic revealing the secrets of the game’s lore.
